The Suspect is a 1944 film noir starring Charles Laughton and Ella Raines, directed by Robert Siodmak. The movie is set in Edwardian London in 1902, it is based on the 1939 novel This Way Out, by James Ronald, and was released by Universal Pictures.
Philip Marshall (played by Charles Laughton) is a kind, henpecked manager who strikes up a friendship with Mary Gray (played by Ella Raines), a young stenographer who had approached him looking for work. Phillip gradually finds himself falling in love with Mary but keeps the relationship platonic. His shrewish wife discovers the affair.
