The Morey Amsterdam Show began on CBS Radio with Morey Amsterdam playing himself. He was the emcee at a fictional New York City nightclub, the "Golden Goose Cafe". Morey introduced musical and comedy acts and he also performed songs and monologues. Art Carney played the character of Charlie the Doorman and Jacqueline Susann played Lola the Cigarette Girl.
After six months on the radio, the show moved to CBS Television. It had the same characters, actors, and plot. The CBS television version premiered on December 17, 1948, and ended on March 7, 1949, after 13 episodes.
At that point, the show was picked up by the DuMont Television Network and began broadcasting again on April 21, 1949,. There were a few minor changes. The name of the nightclub was changed to the "Silver Swan Cafe". along with Art Carney's character being changed to Newton the Waiter, Jacqueline Susann continued as Lola. and Vic Damone joined the cast as a nightclub singer.
